March 2010 Newsletter
Dear Madison-Freiburg
Member!
Our Annual Dinner in the beautifully appointed Student Lounge at MATC
was booked at capacity with 75 members. We enjoyed a fine dinner and
a witty slideshow by Klaus Hoppe from Freiburg's Enviroment Office.
A black-tie jazz group sponsored by our co-president Tom Kaminski played
for the first hour. Door prizes ranging from Freiburg calendars to Kaiserstuhl
wine were taken home by 25 lucky members. And the treasurer was happy
to receive a dozen donations for our Madison-Freiburg Committee. (Please
make more!)
2010 EVENTS
of the Madison-Freiburg Committee
None of the meetings except one require a reservation. We are trying
some new venues for our summer social gatherings or Stammtisch, where
there is NO program or meeting agenda. At wineries and beer gardens
everybody buys his beverage there and optionally brings snacks to share
for the group. Look for a table with a little German or Freiburg flag
or the larger Madison-Freiburg banner.

FREIBURG'S MÜNSTER cathedral: PowerPoint slide show by Jim Steakley.
Freiburg's Münster is truly a work in progress. This talk will
reprise the powerpoint presentation given a few years ago on the history
of the Münster and bring the story up to date by showing a number
of changes made in recent years, both popular (such as the 2009 restoration
of a giant medieval crucifix that has been in storage for the last 500
years) and unpopular (such as the 2005 stained glass window honoring
Edith Stein, or the starkly modern altar table, pulpit, and bishop's
throne installed in 2007). Also new: just three months ago, a young
art historian working in the archives was finally able to identify the
heretofore unknown designer of the Münster's landmark tower.
RESERVATION REQUESTED. Please call Mike at 233-3051 or email mike.vons@gmail.com
if you are very likely to come.
If 20+ people announce themselves by Monday Apr 5, we will look for
