Freiburg Politics Below a quote from the Financial Times, 2 April 2011: "... Voters in Baden-Wuerttemberg last weekend ousted Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, which has ruled the state without interruption sine 1953. They replaced it with the Green Party, which had its beginnings in the anti-nuclear movement of the 1980s, and which will be heading a state government for the first time. The CDU tried to join the post-Fukushima discontent, but too late, and unconvincingly." I had to wait 30 minutes for the next tram in the Altstadt city center,
while some 1000 were marching (Madison style) slowly down Kaiser Joseph
Strasse where pedestrians share the road with streetcars . They asked
for the shutdown of the Fessenheim nuke plant, which is in France across
the Rhine river!
Forthcoming activities in Madison Monday, April 18, 7:30, 104 Van Hise Hall, UW campus John Reindl will talk about Recycling in Freiburg. ====March 2011==== Our Annual Meeting and Dinner was held March 2 in a MATC student lounge. Almost 40 members showed up. There was guitarmusic by Miles McConnell, <Milesofguitar@hotmail.com>. And Manfred Hoefert, came all the way from Freiburg to tell us about the background and contributions to the American Civil War of four Baden 49ers. BTW, Manfred came just in time to see Wisconsin democracy being practiced at the Capitol, where he chatted with demonstrators and quickly posted his impressions on http://Freiburg-Madison.de/aktuell.htm - unfortunately only in German right now. THANK YOUs go to those who donated to our MadisonFreiburg Committee. From the MadisonFreiburg table at the International Fest, March 5, on the 3rd floor in the Overture Hall one had a good view of the Capitol, but still it was too far removed from the action in the Overture or the Capitol. Nevertheless, people stopped by to chat or even buy some Freiburg souvenirs from John, Eric, and Manfred. Monday, March 14, 6:30 PM until dark, Arboretum Council Ring, a few steps south of the Arboretum Visitor Center parking lot. Hopefully, we will see American Woodcocks dance in the sky.
